The History department was established in 1960, when the discipline was included in the undergraduate three year B.A. program. Subsequently, a two-year postgraduate program (M.A. in History) was added. Recently the four year BA(Hons) course has been introduced under the CBCS scheme of national education policy (NEP). Currently, the department provides numerous interdisciplinary courses to students from different departments in the form of minor and skill enhancement courses. The department's program encompasses Indian and World history from antiquity to the present era. The emphasis is on assisting students in cultivating abilities such as writing, analytical proficiency, and critical thinking. The History Department boasts a distinguished and dedicated faculty that actively engages students via both classroom instruction and mentorship outside of the classroom. The department comprises motivated and qualified educators with diverse research and teaching specializations. The pedagogical approach is interdisciplinary and experiential, emphasizing interactive seminars, group discussions, field excursions, and film screenings. Students are encouraged to extend their research beyond textbooks for the completion of their projects and assignments. One of the primary objectives of this department is to instill a long-term historical perspective in its students and equip them for a wider role in the society.
